About 67 percent of Indians prefer America to go abroad for education. This claim has been made in a new report by Fin-tech platform Prodigy Finance. The report of the State of Higher Education in Study Abroad Market showed that in addition to the US, Indian students prefer the UK and France to pursue their master’s degrees abroad. The percentage of these two countries is 8 percent.
Most of the students going abroad for higher education were from Maharashtra (20 percent), Karnataka (15 percent), Delhi (12 percent) and Telangana (8 percent). The report showed that last year almost 70 percent of those traveling abroad for higher education were men and 30 percent were women. Georgetown University, University of Toronto and University of Rochester have been the most popular for MBA programs. .
There is serious uncertainty among students traveling abroad for higher education as most families went through a financial crisis amid a nationwide lockdown last year. Despite this, applications grew by 41 per cent in 2020 compared to 2019. This is significant compared to the 55 per cent loan disbursements in 2019 after the 108 per cent growth seen during 2018.
In 2020, Prodigy Finance disbursed approximately 30 lakh rupees to each student as a loan for higher education. The year 2020 presented many challenges for students, parents and educational institutions around the world. It also forced the financial markets to condensate, which in turn limited the amount of capital we could supply immediately to students last year.
As India’s country head Mayank Sharma from Prodigy Finance said, as international boundaries slowly reopen in 2021 and campus vaccination looks promising in the next quarter, given the vaccination campaign, we will see 2021 as compared to 2020. Can expect an increase of 30-35 percent.
Prodigy Finance has recently partnered with six international colleges, offering a global portfolio of 800 colleges and 1000 postgraduate courses to Indian students. The company has so far funded 20,000 students worldwide, now aiming to disburse more than $ 1 billion in loans to over 20,000 eligible Indian students over the next three years.
