The Corona epidemic has severely affected children’s schooling, mental health and outdoor activities. According to UNICEF, its fatal impact will be read on the education of about 75 lakh children in Bihar. Because only 36.5 percent of the children here have internet and 3.5 percent have computer facilities. According to the institution, after the corona epidemic, about 3 percent or 7 lakh children are not expected to return to school.

About 5.49 per cent of girls between the ages of 14 and 18 and 0.26 per cent of boys are expected to drop out of school. These figures were shared by UNICEF’s Monitoring and Evaluation Expert Prasanna Ash and education expert Pramila Manoharan in a meeting with the Department of Education. The meeting discussed strategies and solutions to continue the education of marginalized children in the midst of the corona epidemic and lockdown.

Discussion on Azim Premji Foundation’s study also

The meeting also shared with UNICEF the data of a study conducted by the Azim Premji Foundation on the loss of studies during the epidemic. This study was done in January this year. It found that an average of 92 per cent of the children in the first to sixth class lost at least one language ability over the previous year. On an average, 82 percent of the children have lost at least one maternal ability compared to last year.

National Family Health Survey also shared data

UNICEF officials also shared data from the National Family Health Survey-5. Accordingly, 93 percent of the households have cell phones. But only 36.5 percent of the households have internet facility. At the same time only 3.5 households have computers.

Demand for digital devices from the center

Additional Chief Secretary of Education Department Sanjay Kumar said that the state government is aware that most of the children do not have internet facility and they face difficulties in using online class and e-resources. For this, we have demanded from the central government that we be given digital devices. There can be no better option because schools provide a complete system for education. Children need mid-day meals, interaction with teachers and friends and other facilities for overall development.

Emphasis on short and long term measures

Ter Dernian, education head of UNICEF (India), emphasized both short-term and long-term measures to promote education in Bihar. He said that to ensure that the children of marginalized groups also continue their education, it is very important to solve them. At the same time, it is also necessary to see how much children are actually learning.

Bihar government applauds

On the other hand, Bihar UNICEF chief Nafisa Binte Shafiq appreciated the steps taken by the Education Department to release education during the closure of the school. He said that Bihar was the first state to start classes through Doordarshan as well as mobile apps and mobile buses for the education of marginalized community children with the help of UNICEF. At the same time, the nomination campaign with the help of Bihar teachers and Jeevika Didi in March helped to raise awareness among parents.
